Child Passenger Safety
Safe car Seats
As children grow, how they sit safely in a car, truck, van or SUV changes. Save your child from injury or death by observing these four steps:
- Use rear-facing seats in the back seat until at least 1 year and at least 20 pounds or when your child reaches the upper weight and height limits of your seat.
- Use forward-facing seats in the back seat until about age 4 and 40 pounds or when your child reaches the upper weight and height limits of your seat.
- Use booster seats in the back seat until the vehicle seat belts fit your child properly, usually about age 8 or when your child is 4'9" tall.
- Use adult seat belts in the back seat at age 8 or older or when the child is taller than 4'9". Seat belts fit properly when the lap belt lays across your child’s upper thighs and the shoulder belt fits across your child’s chest.
All children younger than age 13 should ride in the back seat
